Growth Over Time
No longer is YouTube simply a video-sharing site. They have done quite a bit of growing up, no, in fact a lot of growing up. Starting back in January of 2010, Youtube began its movie testing at the Sundance Film Festival. Here they probed various movie networks to see if YouTube could adapt to hosting more mainstream movies. By May 2011, YouTube had added 3,000 movies to their arsenal which included many classic and hit movies such as; Scarface, Caddyshack, Taxi Driver and newer arrivals such as The Green Hornet and Despicable Me. Later that fall in November of 2011, YouTube managed to twist together a deal with The Walt Disney Studio, landing them also granted permission to use Disney Pixar and DreamWorks Studios on their YouTube channels. Now, combine these past events with the new partnership with MGM and Paramount and you have YouTube beginning to build a movie empire that Netflix and Redbox should be leery of.
